Living on OMR: A Neighbourhood Guide for IT Professionals
What it's actually like to live along Chennai's OMR IT corridor — commute, schools, hospitals, and how the different stretches (Perungudi to Siruseri) differ.

OMR isn't one neighbourhood — it's a dozen
Old Mahabalipuram Road runs roughly 15 km from Perungudi to Siruseri and beyond, and the character of the corridor changes noticeably as you move along it. Perungudi and Thoraipakkam, closest to the city, are the most established — denser social infrastructure, older apartment stock mixed with newer towers. Sholinganallur, mid-corridor, is the commercial and residential peak of the whole stretch. Navalur, Siruseri, Padur and the localities further south are newer, less dense, and generally more affordable.
Where you buy on OMR should depend less on "is it OMR" and more on which specific stretch matches your commute and budget.
Commute realities
OMR carries some of the heaviest IT-commute traffic in Chennai, and peak-hour congestion between Thoraipakkam and Sholinganallur is a genuine daily factor, not an exaggeration — budget accordingly if your office sits at the opposite end of the corridor from where you live.
The inner ring road gives Perungudi/Thoraipakkam reasonable access toward Velachery and the rest of the city without using OMR itself for that leg, which is one reason that stretch holds a premium over areas further south.
Schools and hospitals
The corridor is well served for an IT-driven population: established schools and a growing number of hospitals and clinics are concentrated around Sholinganallur and Thoraipakkam, where the oldest residential density is. Further south toward Siruseri and Padur, social infrastructure is still catching up to the pace of new housing — worth checking specifically for the schools/hospitals nearest your shortlisted project rather than assuming OMR-wide coverage.
Picking a stretch: a rough guide
Want the most mature infrastructure and shortest reverse-commute toward the city: look at Perungudi or Thoraipakkam.
Want to be at the centre of the IT corridor itself, accepting peak pricing: Sholinganallur.
Want IT-corridor access with meaningfully lower pricing, accepting a longer commute to the Thoraipakkam/Sholinganallur job cluster: Navalur, Karapakkam, Siruseri, or further south toward Padur.
